Standing Female Nude – Vincent Van Gogh
by Oxia Palus
The work ‘La Crau with a View of Montmajour’ is potentially a newly discovered painting by Vincent van Gogh. Through the application of X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy to the painting art conservators have discovered an underlying painting of a standing female nude. The nude is similar in style to previous sketch studies by Van Gogh, such as ‘Female Standing Nude’ (1887) and ‘Standing Female Nude Seen From Back’ (1886-7). As such, researchers believe this provides additional evidence that the external work is a genuine Van Gogh and have submitted the evidence to the Van Gogh Foundation for verification of authenticity. Standing Female Nude (2022) therefore acts as the first resurrected work for which the exterior and interior pieces have yet to be authenticated.
