Nymph Lake

(Rocky Mountain National Park, CO)

I was thrilled when I encountered Nymph Lake during my first photo expedition to Rocky Mountain National Park in 2014 and it formed the basis for one of my first Dreamscapes to be exhibited in a gallery setting (in Steamboat Springs, CO, July 2016).

Alarmingly, I was dismayed when I returned to this spot just a few years later hoping to recapture this scene with a newer, higher resolution camera only to find many more trees in the area killed by bark beetle infestation, a consequence of a rapidly warming planet. This experience and similar instances I’ve witnessed of forest loss due to invasive pests and massive wildfires have instilled in me a heightened sense of urgency to capture special places like Nymph Lake before they are lost.

Nymph Lake Dreamscape fuses computational photography and artificial intelligence; specifically, it consists of a 42-shot, 233+ megapixel HDR panorama I captured in July 2014 that was ‘interpreted’ by a proprietary enhanced version of Google’s “DeepDream” AI software in January 2016.
