During my April 2018 fall photo expedition on the South Island of New Zealand, I used Queenstown as a hub from which to take day trips chasing vistas.
Milford Sound is one of the scenic wonders of the natural world, but it is often shrouded in clouds. When weather reports indicated a clearing, I made a run for it and arrived at my destination on a rare cloudless day. Unfortunately, that meant the best view at the time was pointed directly into the sun. Luckily, I was able to find a vantage point behind overhanging branches that naturally filtered the sunlight and, in a happy coincidence, also followed the contours of the distant peaks.
Milford Sound Dreamscape fuses computational photography and artificial intelligence; specifically, it consists of a 42-shot, 244+ megapixel HDR panorama I captured in April 2018 that was ‘interpreted’ by a proprietary enhanced version of Google’s “DeepDream” AI software in May 2018
